How It All Began
The Bluegill Frolic traces its roots back to 1939, when a group of community members came together with a simple idea: celebrate the things that make our town special — the lake, the people, and the spirit of togetherness.
"It started with a fishing contest and a potluck. Nobody knew it would become something the whole town would look forward to every single year."
The Early Years
In its earliest form, the Bluegill Frolic was a one-day affair centered around a fishing contest at the lake. Families would gather with their rods and reels, children would play along the shore, and the day would end with a community meal under the trees.
As word spread, the festival grew. By the 1950s, the Frolic had expanded to include a parade down Main Street, local craft vendors, and live music from area bands. The fishing contest remained the heart of it all, a tradition that continues to this day.
Growing With the Community
The 1960s and 70s brought new traditions. The classic car show was added, drawing enthusiasts from across the region. Food vendors began offering everything from corn on the cob to funnel cakes. The festival expanded from one day to an entire weekend celebration.
Through the decades, the Bluegill Frolic has weathered changes in the community while staying true to its roots. Volunteers have always been the backbone of the festival, with generations of families passing down the tradition of helping organize and run the event.
"The Frolic isn't just an event — it's where our community comes together. It's where neighbors become friends and traditions are passed down."
The Modern Frolic
Today, the Bluegill Frolic has grown into a multi-day festival that attracts visitors from near and far. While the core traditions remain — the fishing contest, the parade, the car show — new events have been added to keep things fresh and exciting for all ages.
The festival now features vendor markets, food courts, children's activities, live entertainment stages, and more. Community organizations use the Frolic as an opportunity to raise funds, recruit volunteers, and celebrate their missions.
